Dangbei Corrects Projector-Brightness Spec in Settlement with Epson

The latest chapter in Epson’s crusade to out projector companies that aren’t playing by the rules continues with China-based Danbei agreeing to correct a bogus brightness spec for one of its projectors rather than potentially face a court-imposed fine.

Under a settlement announced late last week, Dangbei agreed to correct the white brightness specification for its $1,600 Mars Pro projector, reducing the published spec from 3,200 lumens down to a corrected figure of 1,800 lumens. Moving forward, the company also agreed to use internationally recognized standards for measuring projector white brightness.

Two weeks ago, a court ordered AuKing, another Chinese brand, to pay $529,000 in damages in a lawsuit brought by Epson, finding that AuKing was competing unfairly against Epson “by using false, deceptive, or misleading statements of fact that misrepresent the nature, quality, and characteristics of [its] projector products.” In that case, the company had been grossly overinflating the brightness of its projectors to the point where actual measured lumens was less than 1% of the spec it had been claiming.

“Dangbei’s commitment to use internationally published and accepted standards moving forward for their entire product line will provide accurate white brightness information for consumers to make informed buying decisions,” said Mike Isgrig, vice president, consumer sales and marketing for Epson America.

Epson cautions shoppers to be wary of misleading metrics listed as “Lux,” “LED lumens,” “CVIA,” or “Lamp Brightness” that fail to follow standardized methodology, which impacts a consumer’s ability to compare projector performance.

The standards Epson is referring to include projection measurements defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM). The ICDM publishes the Information Display Measurement Standards (IDMS) methodology that defines color brightness and white brightness separately. The ISO standard that defines a methodology for projector measurement is ISO21118:2020.
