Baseus, a Chinese accessory maker that also sells inexpensive wireless earbuds, is the latest company to offer open-ear earphones that don’t fully block your ear canals like conventional earbuds.

Instead of being secured by silicone or foam tips you push into your ears, the new Eli Sport 1 earphones and are held in place by bendable, silicone-wrapped hooks that fit around your ears, allowing you to listen music without being completely shut out from the world around you.

Designed with comfort and active lifestyles in mind, the earphones are water-resistant and come with a detachable “just in case” neckband that can be used during workouts and other strenuous activities. Sound is produced by full-range 0.6-inch drivers (one per earphone) that are considerably larger than the 0.4-inch (or smaller) drivers used in conventional earbuds.

The drivers are positioned at an angle to ensure sound is directed into the ears to minimize sound leakage and keep listening private. The earphones also feature a bass-boost algorithm that “identifies and intensifies” low-frequencies without user intervention and use four microphones and AI-powered algorithms that reduce wind noise and separate voices from background noise to ensure clear call quality.

The Eli Sport 1 earphones are based on Bluetooth 5.3 with LC3 encoding and provide a “lag-free audio experience” thanks to the use of dual-channel low-latency technology, which is said to hold audio delay to a maximum of 0.06 seconds.

Smart Connect technology integrated into the earphones makes it possible to pair with two devices simultaneously and automatically switch between them. In addition to controlling the earphones by physical tapping, Baseus includes an app that facilitates over-the-air firmware updates and provides an EQ with presets, gesture settings, a gaming mode, and a “find my earbuds” function.

Rated battery life is up to 7.5 hours with an additional 30 hours possible via the charging case; a 10-minute quick-charge function provides 2 hours of playback in a pinch.
