Roku Launches 5 New Streaming Players

Roku yesterday introduced five new streaming media players, the biggest product launch in the company’s history, and said more than 100 channels are now available through its search feature.

Ranging from $30 to $130, the Roku Express ($30), Roku Express+ ($40), Roku Premiere ($80), Roku Premiere+ ($100), and Roku Ultra ($130) join Roku’s recently updated Roku Streaming Stick ($50). Except for the Roku Express, which will be sold through Walmart, all models are available for pre-order now and slated to hit stores October 9.

“With this lineup, there’s a player for everyone,” wrote founder and CEO Anthony Wood in a blog announcing the new lineup.

Described as a great solution for new streamers or those who wish to extend streaming throughout their home, the Roku Express offers 1080p HD streaming and a complete channel lineup. For $10 more, the Roku Express+ is for use with older TVs that have legacy composite video and analog audio inputs and includes a classic red/white/yellow connecting cable.

The Roku Premiere and Roku Premiere+ are aimed at viewers who want fast performance through a quad-core processor and the ability to stream 4K/Ultra HD content at up to 60 frames per second (fps); the Premiere+ adds support for high dynamic range (HDR) content and includes a remote control with a headphone jack.

Topping the new lineup is the fully loaded Roku Ultra, offering the best performance with support for Dolby Digital Plus and voice search; it also has a lost remote finder.

Wood said all Roku streaming players provide access to 3,500 streaming channels, including 350,000 movies and TV episodes, and can be controlled by Roku’s signature remote or the free Roku app for iOS and Android devices, which supports features like voice search and private listening. He also noted that Hotel and Dorm Connect simplify the process of accessing public networks for streaming away from home.

“Roku has the most comprehensive and unbiased search in the industry now combing 100+ streaming channels,” Wood wrote in his blog. “Search for a movie, TV show, actor or director and Roku will display where content is available and serve results in order of what is free or lowest price for you. Roku has added unprecedented depth in free movies, comedy, news, sports and more as well as unique catalogues from a wide variety of channels.”
