84 Inches of 4K UHD Outdoor TV From SunBriteTV

Before EXPO, the folks at SunBriteTV told me that they would have a BIG announcement at CEDIA. Often when a company says that, it means they’ll have some sort of incremental upgrade that really doesn’t mean diddly squat for most people. SunBriteTV’s big announcement is indeed big. It’s two big announcements, actually. First of all, SunBriteTV announced two new outdoor TV models that are “among the first 4K-enabled weatherproof televisions available on the market.” The 55-inch diagonal SB-5574UHD is part of SunBriteTV’s very slim Signature Series and has a maximum depth of only 3.5 inches. The other announcement is that the 2nd 4K UHD from SunBriteTV—the SB-8418UHD—will be part of the Pro Series and will feature an 84-inch diagonal screen. Although a working prototype of the 84-inch TV (shown above) was on display, pricing and availability dates have not been announced.

Anthem’s New MRX Receivers Reach Overhead

Anthem Electronics announced three new receivers at CEDIA, ranging from the entry-level MRX 520 at $1,399, to the MRX 720 at $2499, to the flagship MRX 1120 at $3,499. The new models feature many improvements over the previous generations, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X (via free firmware update) for the top two, 720 and 1120 models. All models will feature network connectivity for control via a variety of automation partners such as Control4, Crestron, RTI, and URC.

Barco Closes CEDIA with Stunning Demo

While I only just made it in for the final showcase of the night, Barco capped the show off in style with a stunning cost-no-object showcase of a full 4K laser 6P projector coupled with an insane audio system from Dutch loudspeaker company Alcons. The Dolby 3D theater, designed by Barco with North America partner Display Development, showcased some of the best 3D images I’ve seen to date.

Our Coverage Begins Wednesday, October 14

Better late than never. CEDIA EXPO 2015—“the global showcase of the future home experience”—officially begins this week on Wednesday, October 14, with the Tradeshow portion of EXPO opening at 9:00 AM on Thursday. Normally, EXPO takes place in September; but due to scheduling conflicts, the custom install event of the year takes place a month later. Another change this year is that rather than happening in the smaller, cozier confines of Indianapolis or Denver, EXPO is returning to a city that saw some of the earliest CEDIA conventions—Dallas, Texas. We’re sending a bevy (yes, a bevy) of editors and contributors to Big D to cover the newest, the best, the most interesting, and even the most ridiculous things that’ll be announced or on display at this year’s EXPO. Starting Wednesday, make sure you check out our CEDIA EXPO 2015 blog.

If you’re not familiar with CEDIA EXPO, it’s a fascinating custom installapalooza chockablock with all sorts of vendors involved in one way or another with custom installation (CI) tools, products, devices, and systems. Wednesday's CEDIA 2015 Keynote Address at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center paused just long enough to celebrate CEDIA's 25 years of success and unveil a new logo before futurist Michael Rogers took the stage. The author and consultant is MSNBC's Practical Futurist, Futurist in Residence of the New York Times, and consultant to Fortune 500 companies. "There's a certain liberty when there's a futurist in the room," he said. He then dazzled us with a cavalcade of internet-related technologies and filled the tall order of relating them to the audience of custom installers.

Control4’s OS 2.8 Ups the Ante with Cool Features and Exciting Personalization Routines

Control4 announced the release of the company’s latest software release, OS 2.8, during EXPO. As part of this release, updated Control4 HC-250 and HC-800 controllers will add native integration of three additional audio streaming services—Pandora, Deezer, and TIDAL—to the three that were already a native part of the Control4 OS (Rhapsody, Napster, and TuneIn). OS 2.8 also sports a new My Movies and My Music screen that offers a grid-view for showcasing high-res cover art or a Details View for presenting metadata.
