3-D TV: The Next Big Thing
Now that the American consumer has accepted HDTV, is 3-D TV the so-now product? According to a new online survey, 75% of consumers have seen a 3-D movie and almost the same number would recommend the experience to family and friends.
This study surveyed 750 owners of HDTV - called "3D Displays for Mainstream Consumer" - was conducted by Quixel Research, a firm specializing in the TV display market.
Twice.com quoted a rep from the company: “3-D has been around for a long time but has not really penetrated the home or personal display markets,” stated Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel Research principal. “Our study shows that over half of the consumers surveyed are interested in a 3-D display at home and a significant group of the sample expects to see a home offering in the next one to two years. With consumer adoption of HDTV well over 50 percent, this is great news for manufacturers looking for the next big thing.”

More than half would be interested in 3-D for home use. Over one-third expect 3-D TV technology will be hitting the home market within the next two years, with half stating they want 3-D content delivers via cable or satellite, although they would prefer Blu-ray.
Surprisingly, they said that although 3-D glasses were a distraction, they would still be interested in 3-D, but they would be willing to pay more for 3-D TV without the need for glasses.

Home use for 3-D is an interesting situation. Do you use the funky glasses? Include a 3-D version of a movie along with a standard version? Is it a gimmick, or the next 3-dimensional thing? —Leslie Shapiro
