DVD Review: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
20th Century Fox Movie •• Picture ••½ Sound •••• Extras •••½ |
Films with lightweight stories and tons of special effects need stellar presentations on DVD. The sound mix here is exactly what you'd hope for - loud and aggressive, with constant motion. Whether it's the Silver Surfer racing through the sky or one of the many scenes of environmental devastation, the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is always engaging. Unfortunately, the 2.35:1 transfer isn't quite up to this standard. Colors are mostly bright and crisp - but in many scenes there's too much edge enhancement, while in others the picture goes soft.
Extras on this two-disc Power Cosmic Edition manage to partially redeem the set. Don't bother with the director and crew commentaries on Disc 1. The documentary on Disc 2 is an interesting look at the stages of the production, while the 40-minute examination of the origins of the Silver Surfer is sure to please fans of the original comics.
