Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, it is the story of a British college professor who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner. The story is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and, ultimately, the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life.

By far one of the best films that I’ve seen from 2009, A Single Man is a powerful look at human emotion and our outlook on life. Firth is amazing in this performance and in my opinion should have been the lead contender for Best Actor at the Oscars. I love how well this film captures the emotions of the actors and the photography is brilliant with its use of color. A must see for fans of captivating drama.

This is an absolutely gorgeous film with some of the best photography I’ve seen in recent memory. I love the angles, tight shots and especially the use of color to express the mood of the moment. Fine detail is exquisite and dimension is outstanding. A delight to watch on Blu-ray. The soundtrack is also moving with an emotional score that lends so much to the mood and atmosphere of the film. Dialogue is captured perfectly with no sign of strain or off balance and the surrounds manage to fill in the ambiance nicely.

Extras are a bit limited for this one and include a feature commentary and behind the scenes look at the film’s production.

This received a very limited release in theaters and it is a shame. I love human films like this and this is one of the best I’ve seen lately. Firth and Moore are in top form and you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautifully composed film. Highly recommended.
