LG's Stunning “Wallpaper” OLED Arrives in Stores
It can be yours for $20,000.
Dubbed “wallpaper” for its “picture-on-wall” form factor, the OLED77W7P was a bona fide showstopper at CES 2017 as attendees marveled at its ultra-slim, tenth-of-an-inch profile. Its semi-flexible screen is so light that it attaches magnetically to a mounting plate on the wall.
The 77W7P is the top model in LG’s Signature W7 series and, like the $8,000 65W7P we reviewed, is a two-piece affair in which all of the TV’s electronics are housed in an equally sleek companion soundbar that connects to the floating screen via a thin ribbon cable. In addition to the TV electronics, the 58-inch-wide soundbar houses a 60-watt amplifier and eight speakers, configured for a scaled-down version of Dolby Atmos surround sound. In keeping with the futuristic theme, when the system is powered up, an upfiring speaker pod rises majestically from either end of the bar.
The W7 models are based on LG’s webOS 3.5 smart TV platform and support the HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) high dynamic range (HDR) formats as well as Google’s VP9 video codec, which is optimized for 4K/Ultra HD content. The TVs also have an "active HDR" mode, which analyzes HDR10 and HLG content scene-by-scene to improve picture quality.
