A professional writer finds his life turned upside down when he attracts the amorous attention of his late client's sister in this dark romantic comedy about a quirky young man who can't tell "write" from wrong.

The front cover of this one makes a comment about this being a romantic comedy. While it does have a dry sense of humor, the last thing I would call this is a comedy. Romance isn’t much of a participant either. More of a character study than anything else, The Last Word is entertaining in subtle way and shows the awkward relationship between a two people who have little in common. The film features some interesting ideas about life and an occasional giggle or two.

The HD presentation is good but a bit inconsistent. Detail wavers considerably from scene to scene and at times different shots almost looked like they were shot with completely different cameras. A few occasions almost looked like the Blu-ray reverted to the DVD encode! Depth of image is solid for the most part and in the stronger scenes fine detail and dimension are quite good. The color palette has a very natural look to it and contrast is solid.

The 5.1 lossless soundtrack is pretty cut and dry for this type of film. Dialogue is the key player here and tonal balance is natural and imaging is good. The surround soundstage is subtle at best with only some occasional ambiance. The film’s score and soundtrack add some richness to the mix, but it is still pretty subdued.

Extras are a bit slim with the trailer, a photo gallery and some deleted scenes.

Overall an interesting relationship movie that features some pretty good performances. While I don’t see a high replay value for this one, it is worth a rental for fans of an awkward date flick.
