Kaleidescape to Turn Blu
The capability will come in the form of a new BD/DVD/CD player compatible with existing Kaleidescape servers. Slated for 2009, the device may also be able to download content from the Internet.
Kaleidescape has fought in court for its customers' right to transfer standard-def DVD content to servers. However, it looks as though this implementation would use the studio-sanctioned managed copy feature. There may be a per-disc charge to the consumer for the use of managed copy but nothing has been determined, to the best of our knowledge, or announced.
A similar scheme is already being used to allow DVD content to be bumped to Windows PlaysForSure (now Certified for Windows Vista) devices. Apple is pushing another proprietary version for use with the Apple TV device.
