The bright green fiberglass-reinforced plastic enclosure of the Subterrain-12 caught my eye as I walked the aisles of CEDIA 2015. Designed to be buried 3 feet under, the subterranean subwoofer has a 12-inch driver that vents through a mushroom dome that blends nicely into landscaped areas.

If you haven’t heard, DTS Play-Fi is a housewide wireless audio streaming solution making a heavy play to take a bite out of the Sonos’ pie. Play-Fi's technology has been licensed by many partners including Definitive Technology, Polk Audio, MartinLogan, Paradigm, Anthem, McIntosh and more. However, because the Play-Fi system is so reliant on the smart device - iOS or Android, phone or tablet - that is currently controlling it, there has been no way to integrate any of the Play-Fi products with third party control. Until now.

Behind this innocuous photo is one of the most exciting demonstrations I had at this show, a demo of a technology and not a specific product. For several years now DLP has faded a bit from its glory days in home theater projectors (it continues to be big for business and theatrical presentations). LCOS and LCD have ruled the roost, particularly from the trio of Epson, JVC, and Sony.

The chip at the right in the photo is TI's big 4K DLP chip, widely used in 3-chip theater projectors. On the left is a new, smaller "4K" chip...

The Trinnov preamp-processor definitely falls into the "if you have to ask" category. But as long as you're asking, $17,000 will get you a version with 8 outputs and $21,000 will give you 16...

Legacy Audio had a static display at CEDIA this year but that didn’t stop visitors from swooning over the gorgeous finishes of their latest offerings including the new on-wall/in-wall Silhouette pictured. This beauty features their flagship AMT tweeter and Silver/Graphite midrange.

Control4 announced the release of the company’s latest software release, OS 2.8, during EXPO. As part of this release, updated Control4 HC-250 and HC-800 controllers will add native integration of three additional audio streaming services—Pandora, Deezer, and TIDAL—to the three that were already a native part of the Control4 OS (Rhapsody, Napster, and TuneIn). OS 2.8 also sports a new My Movies and My Music screen that offers a grid-view for showcasing high-res cover art or a Details View for presenting metadata.

Control4’s OS 2.8 update involves more than adding a few streaming services and a new interface for My Movies and My Music, though. The new OS includes...

Parts Express showed a prototype of a new subwoofer plate amp (available soon). It includes two separate amp channels, to separately power two subwoofer drivers in the same cabinet (with each amp rated at over 1200W into 4 ohms), or perhaps single driver with a slaved sub located elsewhere. The amps also offer DSP room compensation, and while it wasn’t yet clear exactly how this would be implemented or how extensive it might be, a microphone for it is included. Price TBD.

People who walked in to the GoldenEar sound room at CEDIA 2015 sat down eager to hear a Dolby Atmos setup anchored by the Triton One tower speakers in the front of the room. Despite the presence of those floorstanders, all of the speakers used for the Atmos demonstration were in the ceiling—including the left, right, and center. Only the new Supersub XXL was operating on the floor.

While I only just made it in for the final showcase of the night, Barco capped the show off in style with a stunning cost-no-object showcase of a full 4K laser 6P projector coupled with an insane audio system from Dutch loudspeaker company Alcons. The Dolby 3D theater, designed by Barco with North America partner Display Development, showcased some of the best 3D images I’ve seen to date.

What do you do if you want to have a terrific sound system, the low bass impact of a subwoofer, access to all the modern sources, full control and power management, and see absolutely nothing except the video display on the wall? The answer very well may be, “You use Millson Custom Solutions’ new CinemaFrame.”

The one thing that nearly every home in the country has been wired with is good o’le RG6 coax cable. This is traditionally used for off-air antenna, cable TV or satellite video distribution, but now the smart guys at Metra Home Theater Group have introduced the M3B Metra Multimedia Broadcast system to utilize this existing cabling to create a low cost, incredibly scalable HDMI matrix distribution system.

Perfectionist speaker brand Revel is taking a good-better-best approach to marketing, with the new Concerta 2 occupying the entry-level part of the spectrum, joining the step-up Performa 3 and step-way-up Salon.

Anthem Electronics announced three new receivers at CEDIA, ranging from the entry-level MRX 520 at $1,399, to the MRX 720 at $2499, to the flagship MRX 1120 at $3,499. The new models feature many improvements over the previous generations, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X (via free firmware update) for the top two, 720 and 1120 models. All models will feature network connectivity for control via a variety of automation partners such as Control4, Crestron, RTI, and URC.

DTS:X was featured on the floor in just about every new high end receiver and audio processor but just when will we hear DTS:X in the home??
