Dolby Atmos Coming to Apple Music App on LG TVs

LG today announced a software update that brings native support for Dolby Atmos music to the Apple Music app on its TVs.

Hailed as a first for a TV maker, the free update will enable owners of many LG TV models to enjoy music encoded in Dolby Atmos surround sound. The update is rolling out to LG OLED sets running webOS 4.0 or higher that were built between 2018 and 2024, QNED TV models Q90T and above, and the smaller-screen lifestyle models MyView Smart Monitor, StanbyME, and StanbyME Go.

The Apple Music app automatically plays Dolby Atmos tracks over the speakers built into compatible LG TVs as well as over a Dolby Atmos-enabled LG soundbar if one is connected. For TVs connected to a soundbar, LG’s "loudness normalization algorithm" automatically adjusts volume to balance sound from the TV with sound from the soundbar.

Owners of LG TVs that do not include support for Dolby Atmos will still be able to stream Atmos music as long as the TV is connected to one of LG’s Atmos-enabled soundbars.

Apple Music is an ad-free streaming service that maintains a library of more than 100 million songs and 30,000 curated playlists in addition to offering Apple Music Live concerts featuring live video streams, post-show video playback, and artist interviews. Songs and albums available in Atmos surround sound carry a Dolby Atmos “badge” on the album’s detail page.

On LG TVs, the app can be accessed using a voice command or through the Music Quick Card on the home screen of select LG 4K and 8K TVs made between 2022 and 2024.

Simultaneous with the availability of the Apple Music Atmos update, LG is offering a free three-month Apple Music trial to owners of compatible TVs. The trial will be offered through 2025.
