Britain’s Q Acoustics Unveils Mini-Tower Bluetooth Music System

British audio specialist Q Acoustics today introduced a décor-friendly, two-speaker wireless music system built around the convenience of high-quality Bluetooth streaming.

Priced at $999, the new M40 system is a step up from the brand’s M20 HD wireless music system ($499), featuring two bookshelf speakers. The M40comprises a pair of compact mini-towers, one of which provides power for both speakers plus a selection of analog and digital inputs with support for wireless streaming via aptX HD/Low Latency-enabled Bluetooth 5.0, which supports resolutions up to 24bits/48 kHz.

There is no app. Rather, the system is controlled using a small handheld remote with buttons for volume up/down, play/pause, and inputs (Bluetooth, optical, analog, and USB).

Each speaker is a two-way design that places a 0.9-inch tweeter above two 5-inch woofers in a rear-ported cabinet standing only 28 inches tall. The active speaker houses a 2 x 50-watt RMS amplifier/preamp with stereo RCA inputs and a 3.5mm stereo minijack on the analog side plus optical (Toslink) and USB Type B inputs that support resolutions up to 24 bits/192 kHz on the digital side.

A subwoofer output is also provided along with a switch to designate the active speaker as the left or right channel to accommodate placement flexibility and an EQ switch to compensate for placement in a corner or against the wall. Power is delivered from the active speaker to its passive counterpart via a supplied 13-foot speaker cable.

The M40 features Q Acoustics’ C3 Continuous Curved Cone woofer, which is designed to integrate smoothly with the tweeter and combines the “outstanding bass performance of a traditional straight cone with the high/midrange control and fidelity of a flared cone.” Each speaker incorporates an internal Helmholtz Pressure Equalizer (HPE) tube to reduce unwanted standing waves inside the cabinet, which is built with proprietary Point to Point (P2P) internal bracing to keep the speaker rigid.

The system is rated down to 38 Hz (–6 dB) and is offered with a black, white, or walnut finish. For more information, qacoustics.com.
