First 50GB Blu-ray Disc To Hit Shelves On Tuesday

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the first three 50GB, dual-layer Blu-ray Discs. We're practically soaking in the first one, as the Adam Sandler comedy <I>Click</I>, which will be on store shelves this Tuesday, is indeed the first 50GB title. Ridley Scott's <I>Black Hawk Down</I> will be the second, arriving on November 14th, and that will be followed by the day-and-date with DVD release of <I>Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby</I> on December 12th.

PlayStation3 To Include Dolby TrueHD Decoding

Sony's PlayStation3 is looking like a better deal all the time. The latest revelation is that the Blu-ray Disc based game console will include the ability to decode up to 7.1-channels of Dolby TrueHD. TrueHD is a so-called "lossless" audio codec that attains compression rates as high as 4:1, but reconstructs the original signal bit-for-bit on playback. Although there have been delays announced for the European availability of PS3, the premium version of the console is due to hit US stores on November 17th at a price of $599.

Day And Date Movie Downloads With Burn To DVD

This past Tuesday Universal Studios released <I>The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift</I> day and date on standard DVD, HD DVD, and through <a href="http://ultimateavmag.com/news/040606industrynews/">CinemaNow</a> in a "downloadable DVD version" that can be downloaded and then burned to a blank DVD for just $9.99. The burned DVD is claimed to be playable "in virtually any DVD player," which means CinemaNow users aren't confined to watching the feature film on their computer monitors.

At the CEDIA EXPO held earlier this month in Denver, Colorado, Infinity Systems introduced three new systems in the company's Total Solutions System line: the TSS-1200, TSS-800, and TSS-500. Each speaker system is a complete 5.1-channel package that includes two pairs of wall-mountable satellite speakers, a low-profile center channel, and a powered subwoofer.

Microsoft Officially Announces HD DVD Drive For Xbox 360

Ending months and months of speculation, Microsoft finally made an official announcement for its external HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 gaming console. The drive will cost $199.99 and will be available in North America in mid-November and will come bundled with a copy of the HD DVD of Peter Jackson's <I>King Kong</I>.

A Flat-Panel TV Cable Cover Up?

Wiremold wants do-it-yourself flat-panel TV installers to play hide-and-seek with the many cables plasma and LCD TVs have to have in order to do their thing. Professional installers have the wherewithal to slip those butt-ugly cables in the wall behind a high-tech display; but you and I might not be so inclined, nor do we have the tools necessary to make an in-the-wall install really stay in the wall. (If you think a crowbar might be a good tool to use when installing any kind of electronics in the wall, you should consider consulting a professional.)

Reports have circulated the web that engineers from Warner have filed for a patent application for a triple format disc that would have DVD on one side of the disc and both Blu-ray and HD DVD layers on the other side. Serious In-Ceiling Sound

Two new Architectural Speaker Series (otherwise known as in-wall and in-ceiling speakers) models are coming from Definitive Technology this fall. The Reference Ceiling Speaker UIW RCS II is designed for use as in-ceiling front main left, center, and right speakers or as rear or side speakers. Built like a brick house, the RSC II uses a non-resonant, sealed, medite enclosure. The sealed enclosure helps the speaker to provide nearly identical performance regardless of the available air space above the ceiling. The new model is a serious in-ceiling offering. With outer dimensions of 15.5 inches by 15.5 inches (and 5 7/8 inches deep), the RCS II is large enough to hold a forward-angled D'Appolito driver array using two 5.25-inch bass/midrange drivers and a one-inch pure aluminum tweeter plus a pair of 6.5-inch pressure-coupled planar low-bass radiators.
