Sonus Faber Resurrects Long-Discontinued Speaker with New 30th Anniversary Edition
In October the company will release 300 pairs of the revived Concertino G4 “Maestro,” a fourth-generation model that “builds on the success” of the long-dormant Concertino G3, while bringing decades of speaker innovation into focus. Prices start at $5,000/pair, and each speaker will feature a brass nameplate engraved with progressive numbering.
The Concertino G4 mates a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter with a 5-inch mid-woofer in a trapezoidal cabinet that stands just over a foot tall. The shape of the cabinet is said to allow for precise modeling that limits internal resonances and reduces the need for damping material inside the cabinet. The side panels also feature internal ribbing, which is said to enhance rigidity without bracing.
Sonus faber is emphasizing the use of sustainable materials with the G4, including a patented faux leather finish material from Italian startup Ohoskin that’s made with oranges and cactuses and an enclosure featuring solid walnut side panels and a mid-section made of cork with a rear-facing port fashioned out of wood instead of the usual plastic. Though cork has been used in the company’s Suprema and Sonetto speaker lines, this is the first time it has been paired with a mid-woofer.
The Concertino G4 uses a simplified crossover designed to ensure accurate phase alignment and is rated down to 60 Hz. Nominal impedance is 4 ohms and sensitivity is spec’d at 85 dB. Matching stands featuring walnut accents will be available for $1,500/pair.
