Miloš Forman’s Amadeus is a cinematic masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of traditional biopics, a complex dive into the intersection of genius, envy, and human creativity. Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture (Saul Zaentz), Best Director (Miloš Forman), and Best Actor (F. Murray Abraham), the film weaves a brilliant story with superb performances and excellent visual artistry. Based on Peter Shaffer’s stage play of the same name, Amadeus reimagines the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart through the lens of his rival, Antonio Salieri, creating a narrative that is as much about the torment of mediocrity as it is about the brilliance of genius.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we wanted to put our final BHM aural spotlight on the always dynamic Tampa rapper Doechii. Not only did she perform a mightily charged set in New Orleans the night before Super Bowl LIX just 19 days ago, but on February 2, 2025, Doechii also won the Grammy for Best Rap Album for her powerful 2024 mixtape release, Alligator Bites Never Heal. Even better, all of Bites is available in Dolby Atmos. Read Mike Mettler’s review of a pair Alligator tracks — the self-analytical “Denial Is a River” and the knowingly defiant “Boiled Peanuts” — to find out just how Doechii has taken a serious bite out of the 360-degree apple. . .

I recently got an exclusive look at the Mazda REF6—a custom audio project car built by none other than Jeffrey Hald. This isn’t your everyday Mazda; it’s a 1,200‑hour masterpiece featuring JL Audio speakers and electronics that was crafted over five years, accumulating accolades like three triple crowns, an expert win last year, and four install championships.

I had a blast at the 2025 Florida International Audio Expo, especially checking out the high-fidelity automotive setups. One standout was a 2023 Cadillac XD5 that combines factory looks with cutting-edge sound tech.

Staying on the positive tip here in the home stretch of Black History Month, soulful singer/rapper Aloe Blacc has released five tracks in Dolby Atmos ahead of the official February 28, 2025, release of his new, 12-song album from whence they came, Stand Together. Read Mike Mettler’s review of a pair of them — the positive-vibe duo that is “Don’t Go Alone” and “Breakthrough” — to find out just how Blacc conquers the 360-degree realm. . .

Memphis rapper NLE Choppa is in the midst of celebrating Black History Month by releasing a new single each week here in February 2025. His first two BHM offerings— the hopeful confessional of “Crescent Moon,” and the anti-gun-violence hip-hop hymnal “Can We Live?”—both aspire to achieve loftier heights and goals in Dolby Atmos (albeit in slightly different ways). Read Mike Mettler’s review to find out if the Atmos mixes of these two uplifting tracks maximize their best 360-degree intentions. . .

Right out of the gate with Cronos, his first feature film, director Guillermo del Toro displayed a keen eye that would serve him well throughout his career. It’s a vampire story… kind of, as a rich old man is seeking a legendary device that can supposedly impart eternal life, but with some dark side effects. When the golden doodad comes into the possession of a humble antiques dealer, violent and unpredictable events begin to unfold. Anyone looking for a well-executed offbeat horror would do well to check out Cronos.
