Remember when the DVD was introduced? Remember how all the hardware companies and Hollywood studios played nice together, bringing out a steady flow of players and movies? Well, you can forget about that when the HD DVD and Blu-ray high-def disc formats debut over the next few months.

The compact Targus SoundUP iPod sound enhancer plugs into any third- or fourth-generation iPod or iPod photo and is said to "recreate studio-quality sound" from digitally compressed music. That's a big claim for such a little device - one we had to check out.

"Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)" was my favorite track on Led Zeppelin II. Maybe it was just teenage hormones, but the way the song took off like a shot appealed to me. Like you could OUTRACE society. And I've always been about playing outside society.

Within a day of returning from the consumer electronics show, I was asked the same question by at least 10 people: "What was the most exciting product you saw in Las Vegas?" We've added five products to The List this month. The Sony and HP rear projectors in this issue are both highly recommendable. The Qsonix Digital Music System, while pricey, is so distinctive and lovable that we had to include it despite its being a work in progress (at least it's upgradable). Garmin's nüvi Digital Travel Assistant is also expensive but beautifully executed.

HD Movies Free on Cable "Free" and "cable" don't usually go together. Yet about 80% of Comcast households are being offered a sprinkling of high-def video-on-demand movies free each month. April titles will include Cliffhanger, Desperado, and The Fifth Element.

Apparently, Dolby isn't satisfied with getting its 7.1-channel Dolby Digital Plus and 8-channel lossless TrueHD technologies into the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc systems (as requirements in the former, as options in the latter). At the Consumer Electronics Show, Dolby's Audistry subsidiary was demonstrating some new technology intended for the other end of the sound-reproduction scale.
