CEDIA Expo 2005 is nearly upon us, and with it comes a rash of new audio and video goodies. The annual trade-only event of the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association, held this year as most in Indianapolis, Indiana, has grown in a dozen years from a small education and demonstration event into an industry powerhouse second only to the immense January Consumer Electronics Show.

2014 CEDIA Expo Coverage Begins Wednesday

In the grand scheme of all things electronic, it’s not as big a deal as the annual CES in Las Vegas. In many respects, though, CEDIA Expo 2014 is an even more important event for people interested in customizing home technologies to make them seamless, integral parts of their customers’ lives. Oh, hell, what am I saying? “Customizing home technologies…” The guys—and most of them are guys, although that’s changing—who go to the CEDIA Expo every year are fascinated by gear that can be hidden, be controlled at a distance, is motorized or otherwise moveable, and can be tweaked and tinkered with. Sure, we talk about "lifestyles", but the reality is we go to CEDIA to geek out on the gear.

It’s a completely safe bet that when the show floor at CEDIA Expo 2014 officially opens at 9:00 AM on Thursday, September 11, the place will be packed‐and a number of us from Sound & Vision will be fighting our way through the throngs of installers, designers, specifiers, representatives, and booth demonstrators...

Emerald (formerly Emerald Expositions) announced today that CEDIA Expo 2020, scheduled to take place September 8-12 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO, has been canceled. The event, which draws custom A/V and smart home technology integrators from the U.S. and beyond and also serves as a key launch platform for new products, follows a series of 2020 show cancellations, including High End Munich, AXPONA, and Rocky Mountain Audio Fest.

Concern over the rapidly spreading Covid-19 Delta variant has wreaked havoc on CEDIA Expo 2021 but the show is soldiering on. Here’s some of the CEDIA-related news that has crossed our desk.

Thursday at CEDIA is press day. The floor isn't open, but the day is usually filled with activities. This year things thinned out with the cancellation of several events, notably Toshiba. I suspect HD-DVD was going to be Toshiba's featured attraction, but
the word is out that this year's scheduled launch of HD-DVD has been put off until spring, where the battle will go toe-to-toe, or bit-to-bit, with Blu-ray.

First thing Friday morning, the day the show floor opened, I dashed over to Projection Design's booth. The Norwegian manufacturer promised to have something revolutionary. And they did. Their Model Three 1080 single-chip front projector, as the model number suggests, offers a full 1920x1080 resolution. This originates from a brand new TI DLP chip, with full 1920x1080 resolution. That's on the chip, not just on the screen. In short, it does not use the wobulation technology you'll find in all the new 1080p rear projection sets. The latter apparently does not work well with large, front-projection images.

But whoever said AV journalists were sane?

See if one of these top home tech pros is near you.

The annual Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) show has just vacated New Orleans, leaving several interesting announcements for home-theater fans in its wake. Custom-installation products and home-automation technologies usually cram the aisles, but among the in-wall speakers and specialized wiring systems were plenty of new consumer-electronics products.

The increasingly unpopular notion of a spring CEDIA EXPO has finally bitten the dust. Originally scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, and moved to Dallas, the trade show will not take place at all.
