Honestly, the whole things sounds a little like a hoax to me, but there are many reports this morning that Arizona Comcast subscribers were greeted by a few seconds of porn right after Cardinals receiver, Larry Fitzgerald scored Arizona's...

Another day, another Comcast story. While the cable giant has been attracting headlines over its controversial net-neutrality stance, it's also quietly trying out new things, one of which is a set-top box that handles both television and internet content.

The Xcalibur box can search live TV, on demand, and recorded material including web material. No, it doesn't offer the same broad selection of web video that you'd get on a PC or other browser-equipped device. But Comcast people say the selection will broaden over time as the device moves from the current testing stage to more widespread use.

The Wall Street Journal describes the interface as "fluid and graphical. A menu displays a strip of images representing recently watched channels and programs, which expand when selected. A redesigned 'guide' displays a cleaner grid of programs by network and airtime so that it's possible to watch TV on part of the screen while browsing."

In late November Comcast began offering on-demand movie titles from every major studio day and date with the films' DVD debut in its Pittsburgh and Denver markets for $4 per viewing. On-demand video availability for major movies has typically lagged 30-45 days behind the DVD release, creating an exclusive window for DVD sales and rentals, which has certainly not helped on-demand's popularity. If this practice extends beyond these markets and to other cable and satellite operators it seems likely that DVD sales will continue to erode.

Whose video on demand service has content from all four of the major commercial broadcast TV networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC? The answer is Comcast.

With the addition of more than 20 series from ABC and Fox on April 27, Comcast is the only player who can make that claim for its VOD operation. The shows include Fox's Glee and The Simpsons and ABC's Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. Fox's Masterchef will be added on June 7 and Hell's Kitchen on July 19. Additional NBC shows on the way include America's Got Talent on June 1, Love in the Wild on June 2, and The Marriage Ref on June 27.

If you're a Comcast subscriber and an iPad user, make sure you download the XFINITY TV app. While not the streaming app widely hoped for, it's at least partially there. The killer feature is that it lets Comcast subscribers stream TV to their iPad from anywhere there's a WiFi signal. No 3G streaming yet. Before you get too excited, there's some limitations.

DVD-Audio: The long and winding road to the future of music?

DVD is a hit. Lauded as the most successful format launch since—well, I guess nothing has had this overwhelming level of acceptance in a long, long time. I wish I could say the same about DVD's younger sibling, DVD-Audio. Introduced three years ago, it's just now starting to gather some momentum. On the hardware side, DVD-Audio offerings run the gamut from saucy little $200 players to budget-busting state-of-the-art machines. New DVD-Audio titles are still just trickling out, but even a cursory glance at a typical disc's fairly lengthy production credits might explain the relative paucity of releases. I counted 13 DVD-Audio-related producers, engineers, and mixers on R.E.M.'s Reveal disc and a crew of 21 on Queen's epic A Night at the Opera. Releasing a DVD-Audio reissue or brand-new title is a labor-intensive effort.

Dave Chappelle intends to launch a new comedy show that won't appear on broadcast, cable, or satellite TV. If you want to see it, you'll have to stream it. The show would mark Chappelle's return to TV after his highly rated Comedy Central show crashed and burned.

From whom you'd be streaming was still up for grabs at presstime. Some observers said Netflix would be the obvious choice. But Hulu or some other streaming service could turn out to be the lucky winner.
