Automation controller company BitWise Controls came to CEDIA to celebrate the company’s fourth birthday and announce the upcoming availability of the BitWise Access Anywhere subscription service. BitWise’s AccessAnywhere will enable homeowners to access and control their BitWise home automation system from anywhere the homeowner has internet access, anywhere in the world, via a smartphone or tablet.

Pricey, high-end, dedicated 2-channel audio electronics were thin on the ground at CEDIA--they always are--but we did see amps from Constellation, Krell, Aragon, Theta, ATI, D'Agostino, and Esoteric (Esoteric is now distributed in the US by Integra). There was also this Boulder amplifier. Boulder is located in Boulder, Colorado, in case you missed the connection, which is just a stone's throw from CEDIA's Denver location.

GOBUDi brought the company’s “Out of Sight Bracket” to CEDIA for the first time. At a tiny corner booth that I almost missed, I found this clever little bracket that makes it extremely easy to mount an Apple TV or Apple AirPort Express in a hidden location without resorting to using awkward straps or double-stick tape on the back of the Apple device. The $19.99 bracket includes two strips of industrial strength adhesive tape on the back that securely hold the bracket in place on the back of a flat-panel or other conveniently out-of-the-way spot. The AirPort Express or Apple TV simply snaps in place in the bracket. All you need to do to remove the Apple box is gently unsnap it from the bracket. The Out of Sight Bracket is available now in black or white versions.

Nestled among the few dozen companies exhibiting at CEDIA 2013’s Media Preview was Soundwall, a Boulder, CO-based startup specializing in speakers that masquerade as art (or is it the other around?). The artwork of your choice is printed on a foam-core board mounted in a 2.5-inch-deep frame that hangs on the wall. Left- and right-channel exciters attached to the back of the board (and powered by a small amplifier), vibrate the “canvas,” turning it into a speaker.

CEDIA was packed with plenty of pricey options for transmitting audio over the air, but at least one company was showing wireless gear at a down-to-earth price. Monoprice’s Wireless Speaker Transmitter ($88.11) is a transmitter/receiver system that sends CD-quality audio over the 2.4 GHz band at distances up to 98 feet. And since were talking Monoprice here, a no-frills cables/accessories e-tailer that places a premium on value over marketing, I will also note the system’s product number: 10601.

Cambridge Audio showed their Azur 752BD Blu-ray player that garnished our Top Pick earlier this year. Recently Cambridge Audio released a firmware update that enables full DSD file playback from an attached hard drive, memory stick or NAS. The firmware update is available from their website for the amazing price of free.

Cambridge Audio has been dinking around with Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR) drivers for a couple of years in its pint-sized Minx speakers, but now it's bringing BMR into the spotlight with a new line of full-size speakers built for conventional home theater and stereo applications.

Although their demos and announcements at CEDIA were aimed at dealers and installers rather than to consumers directly, Energy Squad’s “LED Diet” program is designed to assist designers and salespeople with introducing a variety of LED lighting products. Energy Squad is a “full service national distributor of environmentally-friendly residential and commercial electronics and technologies” that focuses on providing LED lighting, energy storage, and automation products.

The Canton DM 50 sound pad (yes, we love the name too) is just about wide enough for the pedestal of a large flat panel TV. While the driver complement remained something of a mystery due to the nondetachable grille, it does have two 3.5-inch woofers firing out of the bottom. Dolby Digital and DTS decoding are present. Total power is 200 watts, Class D. Like any respectable bar nowadays, it also has Bluetooth. Price $599.

Shortly before CEDIA 2013 kicked off in Denver last month, I wrote a post about some of the things I was looking forward to seeing at this year’s EXPO. There certainly wasn’t anything earth-shattering or paradigm-shredding introduced within the confines of the Denver Convention Center. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few standout products and super-slick demos hidden amongst the hundreds of crowded EXPO booths. We covered a lot of them.

As part of its annual market research report, The Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) asked systems integrators (a.k.a. custom AV installers) how they see the demand for 4K/Ultra HD TV sales shaping up over the next 12 months. Survey participants said they expect the new high-resolution sets to account for only 11 percent of their TV sales, suggesting the need for content to catch up. Is an Ultra HD TV in the cards for you?

Clare Controls motto for CLIQ is “zero wires, zero config, zero headaches” meaning that it should offer both users and installers a better experience. The new CLIQ.host module represents a new, lower price point for the company’s cloud based automation solutions.

Control4 debuted several new additions to the audio/video distribution portion of the company’s well-regarded automation system. Principally was the new 8x8 HDMI matrix switch with built-in HDBaseT technology for sending uncompressed 1080p video and high-resolution, multi-channel audio up to 300-feet over a single Category rated cable. The system can also transmit Ethernet, IR and serial commands over a single cable, making it a perfect application for a retrofit. The new 8x8 matrix features 8 HDMI inputs, 8 stereo analog audio outputs, 8 HDBaseT RJ45 connections, 2 HDMI outputs for local connection, and 8 Ethernet inputs for each zone.

Crestron’s message this CEDIA is, “Don’t just interface…integrate” where the home is a single, integrated solution with all components designed to seamlessly work together, and the products at their booth speak to that at every turn. One of the coolest new features is a brand new integration with Samsung’s Smart TVs. Available as an app through the Samsung download store, people can now use their Samsung TV remote to control their Crestron automation system. By pulling up a translucent graphic overlay, there are options for controlling shades, lights, temperature, etc. Also, the Crestron system can send announcements to the TV that appear on screen such as “Front Doorbell Ringing.”

Wolf Cinema announced (but did not demonstrate its new SDC-6 Home Cinema Ensemble, consisting of a single chip DLP projector and an outboard ProScaler MkIII video processor. The 2D/3D 1080p projector is said to offer a dynamic contrast ratio of 15,000:1 and a peak output of 3500 ANSI lumens. But the exciting feature here is the ProScaler processor (not available separately).
