The job would have to be done at midnight. That's when Mission: Impossible III was debuting at Manhattan's Ziegfeld theater. The six bootleggers didn't always have to wait until a movie opened to the public. Sometimes they'd get into private screenings, courtesy of a scalper who'd sell them tickets for a few hundred dollars.

Before I had a chance to listen to them, I read a wonderful, telling statement in regard to the reissues of Boston and Don't Look Back: "remastered under Tom Scholz's supervision." It's true.

Q. I recently bought a 42-inch LCD that I'd like to mount over my gas fireplace. The bottom of the monitor will be 27 inches from the top of the fireplace. The fireplace has a small heat deflector built into it, and there will also be a mantel 8 inches wide mounted about 6 inches below the monitor.

Powerful portable speakers can transform a digital music player into a stereo system or change a personal video player into an on-the-go mini-cinema. The speakers shown here look good, sound better than you'd think by looking at them, and are surprisingly inexpensive. I sampled JBL's latest gear while at CEDIA.

John Chance was a typical Sound & Vision reader - at least, until a year ago. That's when he turned his love of A/V gear and do-it-yourself projects into a custom-installation business. Back in 2002, this New York City fireman designed and built an addition for his house that included a home theater.

Choosing a good loudspeaker is pretty much the same as choosing a good woman. Obviously, they come in all shapes and sizes, and you want the model that's perfect for you. Looking for a speaker that's rich, or perhaps a woman with a wood-grain finish? Don't forget to consider the size of the woofers (or whether, in fact, they are tweeters).

Actually, Sony would prefer that you call its branded vending machines "automated kiosks." And the machines' maker, Zoom Systems, refers to them as "robotic stores." Whatever you call 'em, the Sony Access units are currently being test-marketed in various locations, including: • Malls: FlatIron Crossing (Broomfield, Colorado), Mall of Georgia (Buford), and Santa Rosa

The granddaddy of fixed-pixel technologies, LCDs first appeared in pocket calculators in the early 1970s. LCD technology is amazingly versatile, able to power front projectors, rear-projection TVs, and flat-panel displays.
