Flashback 2005: A 61-Inch TV Only 18 Inches Deep!

A decade ago TVs were getting slimmer but they still had a ways to go by today’s standards. The Samsung HL-R6168W rear-projection DLP set we reviewed in December 2005 boasted 1080p resolution, weighed 99 pounds, and was “only” 18 inches deep at its rear bulge (remarkable for a DLP set of that time). The set had a built-in HDTV tuner (not all did) and was priced at $4,700 ($5,700 in 2015 dollars).

Reviewer David Katzmaier concluded: “Its jumbo screen takes great advantage of the extra resolution afforded by 1080p, and the set’s punch picture and vivid colors are just the thing for high-def Sunday Ticket holders.”

Skip ahead to 2015: The suggested retail price for Samsung’s 60-inch JS7000 4K “SUHD” TV is $2,600 (and selling for $1,800). It’s 2.5 inches thick and weighs 48 pounds.

Here's hoping for a 120-inch 8K screen that can be had for less than a grand in 2025.
