Google May Take on iTunes Store

Look out, iTunes. You may be about to get your most formidable competition yet with the persistent rumors that Google is preparing to launch a music download and streaming service in October.

The signs are various. Google already retails music through Android phones and is looking to update that service. A web-based version has been demoed in public. Executives from the major labels are known to be interested. Google has acquired Simplify Media to obtain its cloud-based technology.

This wouldn't the first time iTunes has faced well-funded competition (from, say, Amazon). But this would be the first time Google search results have pointed music consumers toward the company's own download and streaming operation.
