Poseidon—Warner Bros. (Blu-ray)

Movie: 2.5
Picture/Sound: 4/4.5
Extras: 3

It's New Year's Eve on the Poseidon. Partying voyagers lift glasses to toast the future. The future comes in a rush: a 150-foot rogue wave flips the cruise ship over... and a desperate struggle to survive begins.

This is yet another big budget Hollywood remake of a classic calamity film. I heard a lot of really bad things about this version before I watched it, so I was really expecting a horrible film. Luckily it wasn't too bad. Sure it won't win any awards, but as a popcorn film it succeeds in keeping things interesting and providing enough action to impress most thriller fans. While I don't think I would recommend buying it, it is definitely worth a rent.

This one looks largely like the already impressive HD DVD transfer. There is still some light banding, but nothing to complain much about. I was really impressed with the level of detail, even in longer shots throughout the film. This new Blu-ray gets a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The sequence where the wave hits the boat could definitely be used to show the might of your home theater surround sound setup with aggressive use of the surround soundstage and subwoofers. Ambience throughout the film is excellent, with subtle cues throughout in all channels. Dialogue is never hard to understand no matter how loud the action gets, which is always nice. Overall, this is a great soundtrack.

Extras include some interesting looks at the production including the special effects. You also get a History Channel documentary on rogue waves that is a little disturbing!

This is pretty good popcorn fun and will definitely show off your HT. While not the best film out there, it is still worth a rental for a fun escape.
