Maple Leaf Going Green
Lucky for us, our northern neighbors are taking an interesting step towards going green. The Canadian government is announcing new standards to limit the power used by consumer electronics gear when they're in a standby mode. You know - those little red lights on your equipment and receivers waiting for a signal from the remote control. You didn't think that electricity was needed for those sensors?
Curious about how much power stands to be saved?
According to a Canadian news release from July 2007 stated that the power drawn by electronics in their standby modes accounts for up to 10 percent of the average household's power use for a year.
The report indicated that if these new standards are implemented, one large coal-fired power plant could be eliminated.
Imagine how much money you could save if you reduced this in your household -- government mandated or not.-Leslie Shapiro
