Nielsen: Streaming Up, Traditional Pay-TV Down

Nielsen is reporting that the number of U.S. households subscribing to streaming TV services was up 18 percent during the second quarter of 2015 compared with the same period in 2014, while the number of traditional pay-TV homes decreased by 100 million, a drop of 1.2 percent, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

Perhaps more telling, Nielsen’s second-quarter Total Audience report said the number of broadband-only homes jumped 52 percent over the past year, going from 2.2 million to 3.3 million. The number of homes with enabled smart TVs also grew 18 percent during the period

But figuring out the degree to which streaming video is replacing traditional TV viewing is “tricky,” the B&C report said. While usage of digital video was up 19 percent over 2014, the amount of time adults spent watching live TV remained fairly steady at 4 hours and 11 minutes compared with 4:19 a year ago and 4:29 in 2013.

Cable lost 100 million subscribers? Wow!

Perhaps 10 million? 1 million? 100,000? Methinks there is a decimal misplaced here.
