Universal bringing BD-Live to the iPhone

I love gadgets of all kinds, but there has been more than one occasion where I wanted to slap the phone out of someone's hand for taking it out during a movie. After the release of Fast & Furious on Blu-ray on July 28, iPhone users will have even more reason to twiddle with their touchscreens when the lights go down. Universal will be releasing apps to the App Store to coincide with some future BD releases. Using BD Live, you'll be able to use an iPhone to control certain online bonus features that live on the disc.

The first instance is a "Virtual Car Garage" for Fast and Furious that lets you get info on the cars form the film on your phone while you're watching the movie. In the future, they're planning integration with Facebook and Twitter, as well.

The concept is actually kind of promising, but it's going to need some work before it can actually be considered a real plus. Unless, of course, they come up with an iPhone app that punches the guy in front of you who won't stop texting during a movie at the regular movie theater.
