Universal to Release Movies on 4K UHD Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has announced plans to progressively roll out a “broad selection” of films on 4K Ultra HD (UHD) Blu-ray and in UHD digital formats beginning this summer, helping to push the total number of UHD titles expected to be released in 2016 to more than 100.

The list of planned movies includes the The Huntsman: Winter's War, the summer theatrical releases Warcraft and Jason Bourne, and recent hits Everest, Lucy, and Lone Survivor. Universal said its UHD offerings will also include a selection of IMAX films.

All UHD Blu-ray titles will be offered in the HDR 10 high dynamic range format and some will be mastered in the Dolby Vision format. Many titles will also carry immersive audio soundtracks such as Dolby Atmos.

A report in the industry trade magazine TWICE said Universal titles available for 4K streaming and in UHD digital formats will also be offered in the HDR 10 format and, if streaming services support it, Dolby Vision, the exception being IMAX titles.
