YouTube now accepting 4K video
YouTube's latest addition is surprising, cutting-edge, and wildly unnecessary. The video site can now accept 4K high-definition video. 4K video is video with a resolution of 4096 x 3072, almost four times higher resolution than 1080p video and equivalent to a pair of IMAX projectors. YouTube even put up a playlist of a few sample 4K videos to try to watch, if your computer and connection can handle it.
Don't expect to see a ton of 4K videos pop up on Youtube any time soon, though. While the site can accept video at that resolution, very few cameras are capable of recording it, very few computers are capable of editing and rendering it, very few screens are capable of displaying it, and very few broadband connections are capable of streaming it. Still, it's a nice option, and gives us at least a tiny technical hint of what super-high-resolution video on our computers could be like in a few years.
