Today in Blu-ray: August 18th
Fall TV season is getting close now, but until new episodes of our favorite shows start rolling off the line, Blu-rays are going to be getting a lot of rotation. This week has some good titles, but lacks in the special features department.
Dexter: The Complete Third Season
Showtime's hit about a quirky serial killer hasn't lost a bit of the momentum it gathered in its first two seasons. Unfortunately, the Blu-ray release of Season three is extemely lacking in the extra features department. If you hav BD Live, you can catch two episodes of The United States of Tara or you can check out some cast interviews that aren't worthy substitutions for full-fledged commentaries.
Kagemusha: Criterion Collection
If you have to think twice about picking up a Kurosawa flick on Criterion Blu-ray, then you must be new here. If for some crazy reason you're still not sold on it, take into consideration that Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas co-executive producing. That's some serious cinematic fire power.
Sons of Anarchy: Season One
FX's drama about a rebellious motorcycle gang was a surprise hit last year. The new season is about to start and, if you haven't watched, now is the perfect time to catch up. There is a healthy amount of special features includin gag reels and featurettes about the motorcycles and tattoos seen on the show.
The Last House on the Left
The remake of Wes Craven's demented classic has a destinct new horror look with shaky camera and gritty tones. It's a decidedly different experience than the 1972 version, but it's worth a rental if you can handle its tough subject matter.
Playtime: Criterion Collection
This movie took quite a toll on its French creator Jacques Tati. But, it's widely regarded as one of the best French comedies ever made and the scale of the production is very impressive for a film made in 1967. Check the reviews and you'll find liberal use of the word "masterpiece." Also, take a moment to appreciate the super-wide frame.
