Tech startup Doppler Labs today announced that it is taking pre-orders for its Here One wireless “smart bud” listening system, which is slated to ship in November.

Priced at $299, the app-controlled earbud system is a follow-up to the Here Active Listening system Doppler introduced last year. Here One, the culmination of three years of development with input from 10,000 early adopters, combines the functionality of conventional headphones with proprietary smart listening and noise filtering technologies, according to the company.

Using the connected app, you can make adjustments to hear what you want to hear and screen out what you don’t want to hear. For example, the “in-ear computer” can be used to reduce noise (say, a crying baby), amplify speech in a crowded restaurant or at a party, interact with a voice-activated personal assistant such as Siri or Google Now, stream music, take phone calls, and layer digital audio over real-world sound. Examples of layering include streaming Spotify while jogging without jeopardizing safety, listening to play-by-play commentary or stats at a live sporting event for a better experience, and otherwise creating a “perfect blend” of music you’re listening to and the sounds around you.

Drawing on feedback from early adopters, Doppler made Here One customizable to personal listening preferences so you don’t have to manually adjust filters every time you open the app. Instead, the filters are automatically calibrated to your personal listening profile.

Currently, we don’t have a way to control what we hear, but with Here One, that all changes. We’ve taken the noise filters from Here Active Listening and dramatically improved them so that you can now selectively cancel or amplify particular sounds. Whereas Here Active Listening removed entire frequency ranges, Here One introduces our proprietary “adap¬tive filters,” which identify and target sounds—such as human speech, sirens, a crying baby, a jet engine, and more—so you can suppress or amplify those sounds exactly to your liking.
