Some Blu-ray players need to have their firmware updated before they can play Avatar in its current 2D release.

This is hardly surprising to most Blu buffs. Avatar isn't the only title to function best with the latest firmware and it's always a good idea to keep your player up to date. However, some reports suggest that outdated firmware has been a particular problem with this title, especially for users of certain Samsung and LG players. Sharp, Pioneer, and Sony players have also been affected.
