It’s Earth Day! While you may not have the chance to plant a tree today, you can take a second to do a quick check-in on your green tech savvy. Here’s a few simple ways you can give your home a tuneup. (And maybe even justify buying a few cool new things.)

Disney’s The Jungle Book (not to be confused with next year’s The Warner Bros. The Jungle Book) is a movie that I saw and I have some thoughts on. Probably not spoilery, but I’ll keep them to myself until you click the button right below this sentence…

CES 2016 proved to be a massive year for the petcare gadgets industry. People love their furry family, and the electronics world is finally catching up. The biggest innovation? Headphones for dogs. More than the thunder-dampening earmuffs of yesteryear, these high-fidelity canine cans promise “better than human range fidelity” and “high definition to howl about.” Obviously, we needed to test them out.

Of course, we couldn’t listen to these beyond-audiophile-level headphones with our paltry human ears. So we recruited some of our favorite pups to try them out.

Did you watch The Expanse? I hope so. I’d written about the TV show and the excellent books they were based on last year, and now I’ve got some info on another sci-fi series headed to TV.

It’s called the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, and if you’ve never heard of it, allow me a few minutes to recommend it, and why the TV show will probably be great.

Over the last few years, Audeze, known for their acclaimed LCD series headphones, have expanded their lineups of entry level enthusiast-grade headphones. In 2015, they released the EL-8, a line of portable planar-magnetic over-ear headphones. This year at CES, Audeze announced the launch of not only their most affordable, but most wearable offering yet: the Sine; lightweight, closed-backed, on-ear, planar magnetic headphones. Additionally, the Sine are available with Cipher: a lightning cable with remote, mic, and, oh yeah... an integrated amp, DSP and DAC. Needless to say, I needed to get these on my noggin as soon as possible.

After CES, about a dozen people forwarded me some version of this story concerning a pair of headphones that claim to make you feel psychologically and physically better just by listening to them. Okay, technically, most of the articles stated the headphones “get you high,” but that’s more or less the same concept. Needless to say, I was initially convinced that Lirpa Labs was somehow involved.

It’s highly stylized, fun, and different from anything you’ve played before. It’s a little like The Matrix and a little like Portal. It’s a puzzle game masquerading as a really cool FPS.

It’s SUPERHOT and it’s awesome and you should get it.

Here’s why.

*if you have a phone that works with it.

Samsung’s Gear VR is one of the most amazing devices I’ve ever reviewed. Wonderous. I’ve lost hours spinning in circles exploring the far reaches of the world and beyond. I can’t think of a better way to spend $100 on a product.

Here’s why.

It has been years since a game captured me this emotionally and intellectually. Probably not since the legendary (and perfect) Journey has a game so successfully conveyed emotion, story, and character.

Still not convinced you should check it out? How about this? It’s a choose-your-own-adventure story, with gorgeous graphics, music, and fantastically talented voice actors.

Last year I got all excited about the Syfy channel turning one of my favorite book series into a TV show. I got even more excited when it became clear how much money they were throwing at it. The trailer, too, looked amazing.

So now we’ve had all 10 episodes of the first season of The Expanse. The fact that it got a second season before the first one even aired notwithstanding… how is it?

(Don’t worry, no spoilers)

It’s been nearly two months, and if you haven’t seen it, I have to assume you don’t want to. Cool, have fun with that. You’ve probably skipped past this post anyway.

But if you’re still here, I have some thoughts about Episode VII that I want to talk about and I figure it's been enough time not to spoil anything... even though there are no spoilers here (I don't think).

It has recently come to my attention that certain members of the audio-enthusiast community are concerned by the home audio purchasing choices made by millennials. Specifically, the findings by the NPD Group that 66% of 18-34 year olds use soundbars to listen to music in addition to watching TV. The diehard floorstanding- and tower-speaker fans see this statistic as a harbinger of the impending death of good taste, and prematurely blame the under-40 set for ruining the audio market altogether. I’m here to not only refute that assumption, but to also defend the purchase and use of small audio.

Following the success of their portable Bluetooth speaker, the Turbo X, Riva has decided to go even more compact with their latest introduction, the S. Smaller, lighter, and complete with a ballistic nylon carrying case, the S is just as attractive as the X; made for on the go. But Riva’s S has more up it’s sleeve than just being the Turbo X’s little brother.

Like many of you, I was saddened to hear about humanity’s loss of one of the greats: David Bowie.

What surprised me, though perhaps it shouldn’t have, was how many people I know were upset. What was fascinating was what song or lyric they used to commemorate the man and his music. It says a lot about an artist when it isn’t a single song, album, era, or even genre that is quoted to represent their body of work.

So let’s celebrate the talent and catalog of one of the greatest artists ever.

Here, I’ll start...

It’s that time of year to make resolutions. How about for this year, we aim to be better A/V enthusiasts and put some of last year’s exclusionary nastiness behind us.

Here’s what I mean.
