Gadget Gary: EyeClops Bionic Eye

I spend a lot of time playing with and reviewing cool gadgets that appeal to my taste and yours, so it's not often I get my mitts on something fun that I think your kids will enjoy. Enter the EYECLOPS Bionic Eye from JAKKS Pacific ($50; EyeClops.com). It's a handheld device with three built-in LEDs that magnify common everyday objects 200 times on your TV - basically like looking at what's under a microscope, but onscreen.

Setup is easy. Twist the I.R.I.S. lens attachment right onto the EyeClops, then put it on top of the object you want to see and rotate the lens until the item is in focus. Five AA batteries go into the Brain Case power source, which connects to one of your TV's auxiliary inputs. Also included are a Viewing Tube for observing things like bugs and liquids up close, as well as a Viewing Dish for larger items that don't fit into the Tube.

We started with a simple thing like salt. On our 42-inch HDTV, each grain looked like a giant block of ice. Cool! The kids were hooked. They tried everything - their skin, their hair, the dog. The last digit of the year on the front of a penny filled up our entire screen.

Whenever my kids get invited to a birthday party, we're always searching for a gift that's fun and different. It looks like we've found a winner with the EyeClops Bionic Eye.

Gary Dell'Abate is the executive producer of The Howard Stern Show. Magnified 200 times, he looks like a bigger Booey.
