Neil Young's Archives: To Blu-ray Or Not?
Neil Young is known for hating early digital audio formats, and seemed to be all set to embrace Blu-ray as the format with high enough resolution to be acceptable. His Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972) had been slated for a November 3 release, but it's been pushed back, until some time in 2009.
What's interesting is that some Web sites are stating that it will not be released on Blu-ray at all, but going to their source, Billboard Magazine, it is only going to be on Blu-ray. However, the exact same article is on The Vancouver Times and other Reuters reports, stating only on DVD. Huh?
For a while, Young has been debating whether or not to also release on DVD. Considering that he has always been vocal on his feelings about CD, it seemed odd that he would ditch Blu-ray and go for DVD instead. We'll let you know as soon as we know what's really going on.
While fans are waiting, they can purchase Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 in just a few weeks. This contains material that will not be included on the upcoming Blu-ray.
No word on what's causing the delay in Archives. Maybe he's just waiting to see if a newer, higher resolution format will come along . . . -Leslie Shapiro
