Poll Recap: Tower Speakers Rule

Proving once again that size does matter, a home theater setup based on floorstanding tower speakers—like the ones featured in our recent “Top 10 Tower Speakers: Under $3,000” list—was the hands-down favorite in last week’s poll. We asked what type of home theater speakers you have and two-thirds of the respondents reported owning a tower-based setup, while nearly a third (30 percent) said they have a subwoofer/satellite setup.

We’d like to thank readers who shared details about their setups, which included speaker layouts that went beyond the choices we offered. Among them were setups that mix freestanding and in-ceiling/wall speakers and those with larger full-range satellite speakers. Here’s the complete breakdown:

46% Tower-based setup with full-range passive speakers in the front L/R positions plus a standalone subwoofer(s)

30% Subwoofer/satellite setup with five (or more) freestanding compact speakers and a subwoofer(s)

7% Tower-based setup with full-range power towers (with built-in powered sub) in the front L/R positions plus a dedicated sub(s)

6% Tower-based setup with full-range passive speakers in the front L/R positions and no standalone subwoofer

6% Tower-based setup with full-range “power towers” (with built-in powered subs) in the front L/R positions and no dedicated sub

3% In-wall/ceiling speakers plus a freestanding subwoofer

1% In-wall/ceiling speakers, including an in-wall/ceiling subwoofer
