Now that energy savings are as prominent on consumer radar screens as flat-panel TVs, a set combining both concerns has become inevitable. This week, at a Japanese trade event, Sharp showed the first solar-powered LCD TV. Nope, no U.S. details yet.

The 26-inch prototype was being exhibited as part of a Zero Emission House. It uses a quarter of the power of a CRT TV with similar screen area. And its annual power consumption is one-third that of a conventional LCD TV. Thanks to that low power consumption, it can run off a solar module like the one shown, a triple-junction (that is, three layer) type made of thin film. Sharp also showed a 65-inch model with half the energy consumption of a conventional LCD.
