How Does Your Internet Connection Stack Up?

If you live in Delaware, Massachusetts, or New Jersey, congratulations! Your home state ranks top in internet speed, according to a new study from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). If you live in Mississippi…well, let’s just say there’s work to be done.

In the just-released “2018 US Innovation Scorecard,” all 50 states were assigned grades in each of 12 areas — including Fast Internet — and then ranked according to composite scores.

Using data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the CTA assigned the rankings based on the percentages of households with broadband speeds of at least 10 megabits per second (Mbps) and those with at least 25 Mbps, the FCC's benchmark for fixed broadband speed.

The three top states mentioned above each received an A+ and were joined by 10 other states that received either an A or A–. Not too shabby.

This is not a rating of internet speed. It's a percentage of households that subscribe to high speed internet.

From the CTA study: "The Fast Internet category grades states based on two components: the percentage of households with internet speeds of at least 10 megabits per second (mbps), and the percentage with internet speeds of at least 25 mbps. This category features data from the Federal Communication Commission’s Internet Access Service Report as of December 2016. States in this category are graded on a curve and assigned letter grades from ‘A+’ to ‘F’."
