Whiteout—Warner Bros. (Blu-ray)

Movie: 2
Picture/Sound: 3.5/4
Extras: 3.5

The wind hammers at 100 MPH. The temperature plummets to -120 F. Nature doesn't intend for people at Amundsen-Scott Research Station to survive Antarctica. Neither does a mysterious killer who has committed the first-ever murder on that most remote of continents...and who will certainly kill again. Kate Beckinsale plays a U.S. Marshal plunged into shocking mystery and racing to solve it before being stranded with six months of winter darkness - and a murderer - closing in.

While I’m normally a fan of Beckinsale and Dominic Sena, this one was pretty lame. The film seems to try to be more than it is and the payoff is pretty disappointing. The actors just seem to labor around and the twists are pretty lame. This one got HORRIBLE reviews during its theatrical run and while I don’t think it was the worst film of last year, it is certainly forgettable.

Warner delivers a pretty solid Blu-ray presentation with only a few missteps. The image has a very contrasty look with great blacks and plenty of dimension and detail. I did see some minor banding though front time to time, which may be a product of the special effects budgeting. The soundtrack is pretty engaging with nice spatial cues and plenty of surround activity and low bass extension is pretty impressive.

Extras include a look behind the scenes at the making of the film with interviews and on-set footage. You also get a look at bringing the graphic novel to the big screen, some deleted scenes and a digital copy of the film.

This is one to miss. The story isn’t anything new, the production is average and there just isn’t really any reason to take the time out for it. Pass.
