Super Troopers20th Century Fox (Blu-ray)
Audio: 4.25/5
Extras: 3.75/5
Always looking for action, five over-enthusiastic, but under-stimulated Vermont State Troopers raise hell on the highway, keeping motorists anxiously looking in their rear view mirrors. Between an ongoing feud with the local cops over whose you-know-what is bigger and the state government wanting to shut them down, the Super Troopers find themselves patrolling the boundaries of good taste as they hilariously and unwittingly skid towards solving the crime of their lives.
Cop comedies don’t get much funnier than this. The breakout film for the “Broken Lizard” troop is choked full of great lines and hilarious antics as the Vermont highway patrol plays their games on helpless commuters and battles it out with the state police. If you’re a fan of Comedy Central’s Reno 911, give this one a look.
Fox does a pretty good job with this HD release. The image has plenty of depth and detail but there is a bit of exaggeration in the detail that gives the image a bit of a hard look at times. Color rendition is great and saturation is on the high side and overall contrast is strong. I did notice some light ringing from time to time but nothing overly distracting. Fine object detail is good, but not quite in the league of the best Blu-ray titles out there. Still, considering the budget this is a strong catalog release.
The DTS-HD Master Audio mix is a fun and makes the most of the material. The soundstage is pretty open and far more engaging than I was expecting from this film. You get plenty of discrete surround effects and the low end has plenty of punch when it’s needed. Dialogue sounds as natural as I would expect from the production and the balance of the elements is great.
Extras include no less than two feature commentaries with the cast and crew along with a video commentary. Some deleted scenes and a small promo style feature are also included. A pretty funny drinking game is also thrown in along with the trailer.
This has quickly become a modern day cult classic for the genre and it is great to see Fox give it the Blu-ray treatment. The A/V presentation is strong making this one an easy recommendation for fans of the film.
