Picture/Sound: 4/4.5

An outrageous action comedy-spoof following the exploits of an ex-CIA agent and full-time ladies man out to avenge the death of his brother against kung-fu masters, drug-dealing pimps and The Man. An all-star cast led by Michael Jai White is featured in this 1970's-style blaxploitation action film about the legendary super crime fighter "Black Dynamite." The Man killed his brother, pumped heroin into local orphanages, and flooded the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor. "Black Dynamite" was the one hero willing to fight The Man all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.
This one was a riot. I’d heard a lot of good word of mouth about Michael Jai White’s throwback to the classic blaxploitation genre and this one literally hits every button. From the poor (but obviously intentional) production to the almost painful lines. But this is pure B-movie fun and the best addition to the genre since “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka”.
Sony delivers a solid presentation of this stylized flick. Some of the obvious post production “dating” doesn’t come off as authentic as the acting, but it isn’t distracting. The film has an intentionally gritty look to it and contrast is a bit blown out from time to time. The color palette is vintage 70’s B-film and appropriately warm, overcooked and cheesy. The soundtrack is ripe with 70’s style ghetto music, which only adds to the fun. The foley work is hilarious and the dubbing is intentionally off a bit. They nailed every detail with this throwback!
Extras include a feature commentary with the cast and crew and some funny insights into the production. You also get some deleted scenes, a look at the Comic-Con feedback and Sony’s interactive MovieIQ feature.
If you’re a fan of the genre than this homage is definitely a must see. White did a great job bringing back fun and I’ve heard rumors that we can expect more Black Dynamite soon. Until then, this Blu-ray is definitely a lot of fun!!
