Sony Unveils New Flagship 4K Blu-ray Player

Sony pulled the wraps off a new flagship 4K/Ultra HD Blu-ray player yesterday that supports hi-res audio and spins DVD Audio discs and SACDs.

The UBP-X1100ES ($600) provides 4K upscaling up to 60p and supports the wider BT.2020 color space developed for 4K video as well as Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG high dynamic range (HDR) and the “most popular video file types” used for streaming.

The Wi-Fi-enabled player also supports playback of 24-bit high-resolution audio and DSD files up to 11.2 MHz, Dolby TrueHD and DTS 7.1-channel decoding, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X bitstream output, and Bluetooth streaming. The player can send audio to a TV via HDMI and to a wireless speaker via Bluetooth at the same time, according to Sony,

Connections include a front-panel USB input, separate HDMI outputs for audio (1.4) and video (2.0), coaxial and optical digital outputs, RCA analog outputs, and an Ethernet port for making a hard-wire connection to a home network.

The player is equipped with HDR-SDR conversion, which scales HDR into an SDR image for enhanced shadow detail and highlights on a non-HDR TV, and Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) HX, which is said to upscale compressed-music files and CDs to “near high-resolution quality.”

Looks like 3D movie playback support is no longer priority or deemed unnecessary. Therefore 3D movie future is uncertain or are doomed.

If because 3D is failing again. 4K is better as it gives out a far better picture and also 8K and you don’t need to wear those plastic glasses to view it.
3D ticket sales at the cinema have gone right down too.
But there are other makes of Blu-ray players, that do give 3D support.

It is sad that instead of improving on it (imagine 3d in 4k or higher) they decided to abandon it. I love watching movies in 3d especially using a projector with large screen as nothing draws you into the movie than a well done 3d movie not even 4k movies (still 2d, lacks the 3rd dimentions).

They wouldn’t just abandon it without not saying why, would they. What I have already said, is the reason why.
You can look t up and it’ll say.

The discussion about 3D support is of interest to me as I do have many 3D blu-rays that I'd like to be able to play.

But in a time when we've seen some of the primary choices of disk based players have exited the market leading to some doom & gloom about physical formats being orphaned sooner than we'd like, maybe it's good to just say THANKS to Sony for not only continuing to support it but putting out a universal player! Seeing DVD-A support was a bit of a surprise for a Sony product.

I agree, I’ve been waiting for this player. Now if we could only get Netflix DVD to stock UHDs, or Red Box to expand their support.
