Bargain Basement Blu-ray from Memorex
Is it live, or is it Memorex? Not sure, but we do know that finally a Blu-ray Disc player is available for well under $300 - $269.00 to be exact. The Memorex MVBD-2510 is under that magical price point that analysts have said would mark wide-spread acceptance of Blu-ray. The MVBD-2510 has HD resolution of 1080p, with frame rates of 24p film or 60p video playback.
Not a completely stripped down player, the MVBD-2510 has Bonus View 1.1 for features such as picture-in-picture commentaries and more. It has built-in processing for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, plus a DTS-HD Master Audio output. There is a 5.1 analog output, and the HDMI output takes over the 7.1 output.
What's missing?
The MVBD-2510 will begin selling in the states for $269.00 in November. Should you rush out and buy it? Well, a player coming out at this stage in the Blu-ray era should include Profile 2.0 and an Ethernet connection for BD-Live features and upgrades. The MVBD-2510 doesn't have Profile 2.0.
But, if you've been waiting for the price jump and want to see what Blu-ray is all about, this is a great entry-level player. Get it now, and if Blu-ray jumps to mainstream, buy an upgraded player in a few years. Isn't that the American way? -Leslie Shapiro
