Blu-ray Alternative for Mac
Just days after Steve Jobs called Blu-ray a "bag of hurt," Amex Digital has announced a Blu-ray solution for Macs. Not some schlocky-looking external drive, this sleek, slim beauty is designed to complement Apple MacBooks, but it will work just fine with a Windows PC.
Available as a player or player/recorder, the portable drive connects and gets powered through the USB 2.0 port.
What about Blu-ray being a bag of hurt?
It's not clear at the point if the Super Multi Drive will play Blu-ray movies. It might just play Blu-ray data discs. All the commotion about this new drive has crashed Amex Digital's website.
It will burn BD-RE/-R single layer discs at 2x and dual layers in real time. Blank DVDs will burn at either 4 x or 8x.
Expect the price to run $259 for the play-only model, and $289 for the burner. Pick your color, black or white. While Blu-ray movie licensing might be a bag of hurt, Blu-ray data storage is certainly something Mac users can appreciate. -Leslie Shapiro
