Blu-ray Keeps Getting More Affordable
The price differential between Blu-ray and DVD continues to shrink, according to the latest studies.
Blu-ray disc pricing is down 12 percent for new releases and 33 percent for older ones from July 2008 to July 2009, says Rentrak. According to NPD, the average selling price dropped from $27.72 in May to $19.99 in July. New-release pricing dropped from $28.02 in February to $23.62 in June.
While the price differential between Blu-ray and DVD has shrunk dramatically, retailers would like to see it narrowed further, to two or three bucks a title. Since DVD pricing is dropping as well, the differential is in constant flux.
