Canton Movie 10: Affordability Breakthrough
The six-piece system from the Minneapolis-based speaker maker includes five matching mini-monitors and a 100-watt active subwoofer. The two-way mini-monitors are all magnetically shielded to prevent picture distortion when used near a television set or CRT monitor. Each one operates from 100Hz to 25KHz, with frequencies below 100 handled exclusively by the subwoofer.
A matched system with identical sonic characteristics in all five main channels produces a more realistic soundfield, according to Canton engineer. "The consistency of the tonal characteristics for all the satellite speakers . . . determines the spatial qualities and fidelity of a home theater system," according to a company press release. "To achieve this, every satellite speaker produced is factory tested to make sure its tonal characteristics are identical to those of the reference standard speaker."
. The satellites' driver compliment consists of a 15 mm (1/2-inch) dome tweeter and an 80 mm (3-inch) woofer that crosses over at 5 kHz. The enclosures are amazingly compact, measuring only 3.5" W x 4.5" H x 4" D. The satellites come with mounting brackets for attaching them to the walls.
The Movie 10-MX active subwoofer is a bandpass enclosure with a 200 mm (8-inch) woofer driven by a 100-watt amplifier with a variable crossover that can be adjusted to fine-tune the mid-bass levels in the listening room. Like the satellites, the subwoofer is very compact, measuring only 9.5" x 14.25" x 17". The complete system sells for approximately $899, and is available at Canton dealers throughout the US.
