Dish Launches Multiroom Music App for Hopper DVR

Dish Networks yesterday launched a DTS Play-Fi-enabled mobile app that lets owners of its Hopper 2 or Hopper 3 satellite receiver/DVR stream and control music on speakers throughout the home.

The free Dish Music app—available for download in the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Amazon app marketplace—uses TV audio systems connected to the Hopper 2 or Hopper 3 DVRs and Play-Fi-enabled speakers to play music stored on mobile devices and stream from Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Napster, Pandora, SiriusXM, and Tidal.

Users can play the same music in multiple rooms or select different music in each zone; song title and artist of the music playing is displayed on connected TVs along with the selected music service.

The app is compatible with DLNA media servers and can also wirelessly pair with Play-Fi-enabled speakers connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

“It can be both difficult and expensive to achieve synchronized and high-quality whole-home audio,” said Dish vice president Niraj Desai. “Dish Music is a great whole-home sound solution designed to meet the needs of our customers, as it works with existing audio equipment and is available at no additional cost.”

Brands that currently support DTS Play-Fi include Anthem, Arcam, Definitive Technology, Klipsch, MartinLogan, McIntosh, Paradigm, Phorus, Polk Audio, Rotel, Sonus Faber, Thiel Audio, and Wren. The platform will also be supported in the future by products from Integra, Pioneer, Onkyo, Soundcast, and SVS Sound.
