DTS Announces Play-Fi App for Headphone Listening

DTS has announced a free app that enables content playing on DTS Play-Fi gear to be streamed via Wi-Fi to headphones connected to a phone or tablet.

The DTS Play-Fi Headphones app is available for iOS devices and coming soon to Android devices as a companion app for certain DTS Play-Fi audio products, the company said.

Up to four listeners can join an audio streaming session without disturbing others around them or create a private or shared TV audio listening experience without having to worry about the range limitations of Bluetooth connections. The app uses DTS’s AV synchronization technology to keep audio in sync with video being played on a TV.

When using the app for TV, DTS recommends connecting wired headphones to the phone or tablet to avoid potential audio signal latency issues with Bluetooth headphones.

“Whether it’s enjoying shared content at a higher volume, or multiple users enjoying the same content through individual headphones so they won’t disturb others, the DTS Play-Fi Headphones app delivers high quality audio and performance over Wi-Fi,” said Dannie Lau, general manager, DTS Play-Fi, at DTS parent company Xperi.

The app streams audio from compatible inputs — including HDMI and optical — on the following products:

• Definitive Technology W Studio Micro soundbar
• Klipsch Gate receiver, PowerGate amplifier, RSB-8 and RSB-14 soundbars, and the RW-1, “The Capitol Three,” and “The Three” speakers
• McIntosh MB50 streaming audio player
• Onkyo Smart Speaker G3
• Paradigm PW Link preamplifier
• Phorus PS10 speaker
• Pioneer Elite Smart Speaker F4
• Polk Omni S6 speaker and SB1+ soundbar

DTS said more app-compatible products will launch throughout the year.

The DTS Play-Fi ecosystem includes more than 200 interoperable speakers, sound bars, set-top boxes, and AV receivers from more than two dozen brands, including Definitive Technology, Klipsch, Onkyo, Paradigm, Pioneer, Polk Audio, Rotel, and SVS.
