DVD Review: Ocean's Thirteen

The twisty plot of Ocean's Thirteen is harder to hold onto than your winnings at a blackjack table, so it would've been nice if at least the visuals were clear. But director Steven Soderbergh is up to his old tricks, using different colored filters in almost every scene, with hardly a natural flesh tone to be found. Additionally, the film is given the grainy look of late-1960s/early-1970s movies, which lends a great vibe but certainly compromises the transfer's level of detail.

The 5.1 mix is pretty restrained, only really letting loose when the "earthquake" hits the hotel. Otherwise, surround effects are limited to the subtle background sounds of slot machines and murmured conversation on the casino floor. Meanwhile, David Holmes's hipster score slouches around the front channels.

Minimal extras include a nice featurette on the history of Las Vegas, a tour of the set, and deleted scenes.
