A Facebook Smart Speaker?

The smart speaker market is so hot we wouldn’t be surprised if Facebook decided to get into the act, even though hardware isn’t its forte. Of course, the same could be said about Google, which is on its way to capturing close to a quarter of the market dominated by Amazon, according to a recent eMarketer forecast.

A recent report in Taiwan-based DigiTimes said Facebook is developing a smart speaker.

According to “supply chain sources,” the speaker will have a 15-inch “in-cell” touch panel and focus more on image display than voice recognition. The report revealed only one other product detail: the speaker will be housed in a magnesium-aluminum-alloy chassis.

The speaker, which has reportedly been produced in a small volume pilot run at a plant in China, was designed by Facebook’s Building 8 team, according to DigiTimes. The department’s mandate is “to create and ship new, category-defining consumer hardware products that are social first,” according to the Building 8 page on Facebook.com.

If Google can do it… why not Facebook?
